Peer review - http://monstaargh.blogspot.com/ :)

                                                Peer review - http://monstaargh.blogspot.com/

Question 1 – Is there a sufficient difference in informal and formal design?

Kate use’s both formal and informal elements and principles to create her designs. Her works for example the cd cover uses a balanced use of light contrast and exposure to highlight and empathise the centre of the image. Such a use of formal balance allows for the correct proportioning of the objects within the images, as well as allowing this light exposure to create dominance and surrounding frame that creates the focus within the centre of the image. Each part of the cover allows for a creation of unity which utilises the pallet choices of such a negative exposure effect upon the imagery. The assignment for the cd cover shows a assortment of asymmetrical balance as each side reflects the imagery of the other. This use of informal design once again highlights the focal point at the end of the apparent pathway within the front of the cd cover. The front cover of the cd takes into the use of the Gestalt theory, as it shows a passage, leading to a dark spot in the focal point. This is also relevant to the back of the cd cover. The design allows for a closure of the mind, with the feeling as if you know there will be a scary or dark cold space at the end of the hallway, and your eye just focuses on the thought of the corridor continuing and becoming ever ending. Kate’s assignments, majority focusing on the cd cover designs, show sufficient difference in informal and formal design, creating effective and aesthetically pleasing designs.

Question 2- Is the concept appropriate for informal design? (Give reasons why or why not)

yes the cd cover concept is appropriate for informal design, as informal design highlights the asymmetrical balance of a design and the alignment of design, which is extremely important in the design of a cd cover. Cd covers need an effective composition as it becomes unified and therefore becomes more aesthetically pleasing to the target audience attracting them to buy the product.

Question 3 – Give suggestions as to how improvements can be made & how ideas can be developed further. (Look at the use of space, colour, tone, type, scale, etc)

Kate could improve in the cd cover design by using different letterforms, or by blending in the letterform to create a unity within the piece, this would allow for a less emphasis on the letterform, as it stands out as if it is separate from the design. The rubbish font design was really effective although the, letterform choice could be improved by changing the letterform type, for example using an italic letterform appearance. The letterform colour in the 2nd cd cover design could been changed to a lighter colour or white colour and an exposure effect be use on it or glowing effect to blend it in with the negative film effect creating a balanced design. Kate’s work is overall effective and attracts the target audience to the products. Kate has designed effective concepts and has used a variety of elements and principles.

Question 4 – Rate the overall aesthetic and explain why?

Focusing on the cd cover designs, the strengths of the concepts are the composition of the letterform and imagery, the use of the letterform layered over the background, the use of a focal point at the centre of the imagery, the texture created by the exposure effects on the walls, the imagery creates a 3-dimensional form, giving the illusion of a 3d object within the design, the contrast of the light and dark hue levels and the colour pallet of negative colours. The aesthetic qualities of the concepts allow for this effective design although some weaknesses are apparent, though not many. As the composition of the letterform is effective other possibilities are available, the letterform chosen could have been situated on the wall heading towards the corridor, this opportunity may have allowed for a more effective design if implemented correctly. The design doesn’t have any other weakness’ as to myself it attracts the attention of myself, and other audience. Opportunities for improvement may be changing the exposure effect to a black and white or sepia effect. I also cannot perceive any threats as the design is aesthetically appealing.

Well done Kate MonstARGH!

Design brief - We come in peace - In 1972, an illustrated plaque was placed on the NASA Pioneer Spacecraft. This image was blasted into outer space and was intended to communicate information about the human race and Earth’s position in the Milky Way to aliens. The illustration features a naked man and woman drawn in contour line, the main waving in an act of symbolic greeting. Create your own pictographic illustration; what do you want to communicate to an alien species about the human race?

Contacting intelligent life.....The generation Y experience

 Company:
AusDesign is a graphic design firm that specialises in print media, advertisements, posters, cd covers, movie posters, t-shirt design, illustrations and design. AusDesign as an accomplished design firm within the design community is prepared for any challenge with a fully qualified team of young enthusiastic designers. The team’s goal is to create interesting designs that reach the required target audience, allowing for a consistent theme and style from each artist while maintaining the client’s requirements, allowing for a unique design from each designer. The AusDesign team allows for a coherent approach to the clients requirements while allowing for trial and error with a range of concepts to create and to allow the client to have an optimum and  extensive range of choices, as the final design is a delicate composition, which will attract and communicate to the target audience for the intended conveyed message.

Client: NASA- National Aeronautics and Space Administration, was formed in  1958, NASA is a leading organisation in the field of aerospace exploration as well as science and technology in general. IN 1972 a space plaque was projected into space, purposely to attempt communication with extraterrestrial life.

Project:
NASA requires a pictographic design to be placed on a plaque to be sent into space to reach intelligent life.

Requirements:
NASA is in the need of a new pictogram image to place on a plaque. They have hired us AusDesign to design this pictogram. As one of the world’s leading design firms, NASA selected us for our contemporary views, hip nature And aesthetically pleasing designs that attract our audiences eyes. As we are young they require the design flare of generation y, our thoughts are knew and we are the future. NASA intelligence last sent out a plaque in 1972, using a pictogram contour of a female and male to represent humanity. As NASA received no reply from this message they have decided to try again, with a new approach. Culture is a key aspect in the message, it will allow for any intelligent life forms/forces to recognise who we are as a society and what kind of life’s we live. As a society we wish to emphasise on the youth as their way of living is how any life forms that travel to our celestial coordinates will perceive us as the time that passes the present ways of generation x shall be close to perished.

Target Audience:
The target audience is any intelligent life form beyond our solar system or from within, the age of each civilisation may vary and the cultural barrier beyond imaginable.

Scope:
The duration offered for the design completion is 4weeks, this allows for a thorough insight into research, creation of concepts, refinement and the production of the final product. NASA has offered a budget of $10,000 for the use of research, staff wages over the duration of the 4weeks and the production of the pictographic design.

Possible concepts:
Possible idea’s that communicate the culture of generation y, are the love for music that they share, as well as the rest of society, the invention of iPod as revolutionised the use of music among the youth in our contemporary society. One ad campaign for the iPod of the dancing shadow with the iPod could be turned into a similar pictogram. This highlights the enthusiasm, the culture, the youth and the fun, extensive lifestyle that many individuals choose to live as part of generation y. Another possible concept could be a design of the united coloured hands touching together, this reveals the view of belief and multiculturalism, as racism and discrimination foil our society, views are continuously changing and acceptance growing, especially among generation y. Acceptance is a key feature that needs to be communicated as accepting and welcoming a new race, a new culture is what we wish to achieve by attempting to communicate with extraterrestrial life. This idea allows for a great emphasis on acceptance and the uniting of race and culture.

Storyboard - Hans Christian Andersen- The ugly duckling. I have done my concept storyboard/ opening sequence for the Hans Christian Andersen story of the ugly duckling, i chose this as it is close to many peoples hearts and one of my favorites as a child. The opening sequence shows the egg falling towards the ground for the first two frames, then landing in the 3rd frame and then nested with the ducks eggs in the nest, the 5th frame shows the eggs hatching along with the title, the 6th frame shows the hatched ducklings surrounding the "ugly duckling", along with Hans Christian Andersen names saying who wrote the story :)

cd cover - Assignment 2- Music Packaging

For this assignment I chose to create an album cover and back cover layout for the genre of punk music. I chose 20 different songs from various punk rock artists. I have used Photoshop to create each sleeve individually. I used a font from the website dafont. The designer of the font allows individuals to use his/hers letterform design within others designs. This is the link to the fonts URL. http://www.dafont.com/font-comment.php?file=capture_it . I have used my own images within the design highlighting the punk wrist band of the skull on the wrist of the individual in the design. These original images I have used are below. The layers print screens reveal how I have done each cover sleeve. A brief description of how I created the background in the back sleeve is as follows as I lost the layers of the background. I used a base coloured background then layered a purple and green gradient over the base colour. Then I used the wave square effect on the gradient to create the desired effect. I got this idea from week 5’s tute of creating a retro background. Using more of a punk colour pallet though.

motion retro

In todays tute week 5 we used Photoshop to create the image in the background, using a gradient, an arch effect for the rainbow and an image for the filter paper in the background. Then using the program motion i have used the luma effected to remove the white background from the dancer to place him in front of my background which i created in Photoshop. The text was then inserting and importing the bottle video into the text to make it appear within the letter form.

Motion-Green screen- tute 5

Today in tute 5, we used the program motion to remove the green screen from a video then we added a rectangular mask and then added a circular mask. I then pressed Alt click and dragged the circle to 2 other positions. Then i clicked on the inspector library and oscillated the circle to move from side to side. This motioning circle was placed behind the original video. :)

I have created my rubbish font by using salt, and bbq sauce, firstly by creating the letters using the salt then using a straw to create a groove in the middle of each letter, creating a contour of such, then I have filled in this empty space between the wall of the salt with bbq sauce. I have chosen this approach as ‘rubbish’ using a product which is high in salt and also salt itself. As I believe Salt is in alot of unhealthy foods and aids in obesity, due to the amount of rubbish foods e.g. fast-food that we consume, therefore excessive salt being rubbish in our body’s. Therefore I have created these series of images of a high in fat and salt type of typography. I have then imported these photographs into Photoshop and used bright colours and a high use of lighting and exposure effects to create this effect that draws an audience in just like how the appearance of fast foods draws people in to buy them by using exciting combinations of colours to grab the buyer’s attention. This website has aided in inspiring me to create an typography through photography and other materials. (http://collectionsandcreations.blogspot.com/2010/03/helvetica-cookies-yum.html)

tutorial 2 - Drop shadow - Flowers

To create this shadow effect i created 3 layers using adobe photoshop, using the inner shadow and drop shadow effect, while also using a separate layer with a black rectangular shape  placed over the top of the image as a layer altering the opacity so the image of the flowers is visible but now with a darkened appearence.
